When I was thinking about what to make for this weeks video tutorial I really wanted to make something fun that could be used on different themed cakes, from birthday cakes to baby shower cakes. So when sketching out ideas I came up with this cute rabbit holding onto a bright pink balloon and finished with a big pink bow.
In the tutorial I have made him to fit onto the top of a 6 inch cake, so he stands around 10cm in height, but he could very easily be made smaller to fit onto a cupcake, although you may want to make him without the skewer and cocktail sticks to make him fully edible.
The tutorial gives a step by step guide showing each stage of creating him, from his body, his head with all his features, the balloon and his bow. Now I realise that he is not anatomically accurate for a rabbit as rabbits don’t actually have hands and you probably won’t ever see a rabbit holding a balloon, but I think this cartoon bunny would look very cute on top of a cake!
Also if you liked his bow and would like to see a more detailed video on making a gumpaste bow then take a look in my tutorial section!
When making the cake topper I decide to make him out of gumpaste so he set slightly solid, but you could use modelling paste or icing with added tylose power for added stability.
The best piece of advice I can give when making a similar cake topper is to allow the body of the rabbit to harden slightly before adding the head. I made the head quite large, so you need the body to be hard enough to support the head once they are placed together, else the weight of the head may start to push the body down an your character will sink.
I really hope you enjoy this video tutorial and find it helpful if you are looking to make your own rabbit cake topper.
I have also put a link below to some of the tools I used throughout this video below:
