Firstly before we get into talking about this weeks video tutorial, I just want to thank everyone who watched and commented on last weeks Fault Line cake. I was blown away by how many of you have watched it, this last week, and I am just so glad you like it. (If you haven’t seen it you will find it here)
Ok so back to this week… with summer finally here (although it is a bit wet at the moment in the UK) I thought I would show you how to make a gumpaste flower that would be perfect for summer wedding and birthday cakes. In the UK you always know summer is here when you start to see the sunflowers peaking over peoples fences. So for this weeks video tutorial I am going to show you how to make this realistic looking gumpaste sunflower.
I absolutely love making gumpaste flowers and this one was so much fun to make. The flower itself is made up of the outer petals and the inner center of the sunflower. When creating the petals I actually used a petal cutter from a Dahlia cutter set as this was the perfect shape. I made a total of 40 petals which gave me 2 rows of 20 around the sunflower center. The whole flower measures 4 inches in diameter so would look great on a wedding cake.
My favourite part when creating gumpaste flowers is adding coloured petal dusts. By adding different shades to the flower you are really bringing it to life and creating depth. For the petals I used a tangerine and yellow dust on the bottom to add a gradient of colour going up the petal. For the center I added a chocolate brown, black, green and yellow which really brought the texture of the center to life and finished it off perfectly.
Below is the full video tutorial showing exactly how I made the sunflower. I really hope you will enjoy it and find it useful if you are looking to make your own flowers.
If you’re also looking to find out how to make other gumpaste / sugar flowers you will find more tutorials on my Tutorials page!.
