I just love anything tropical themed with flamingos and as its going to be hot this weekend in England I thought it was the perfect time to share this tropical themed cake with you all. It also gave me a chance to show you how I make my buttercream stripes with my contour comb.

Tropical flamingo striped Cake

I decided for this cake I would use contrasting navy blue and pink stripes as the background for the bright green tropical leaves. I absolutely love how the stripes turned out. I used the metal 2 tone contour comb by Evil Cake Genius.

One tip I can give you is to really chill your cake in the fridge once you have made the grooves. If you heat up your comb in a bowl of hot water, you can then add the next colour and when you come to scrape the side of the cake the heat from the comb smooths the buttercream perfectly, creating nice defined stripes. You will only be able to heat up a metal scrapper and make sure its not too hot that you can’t get it out. Also make sure all the water has been dried off before adding it to your cake, as buttercream doesn’t like water!!

Flamingo Cake

I really love how all the elements came together and by incorporating tropical leaves, tropical flowers and this bright pink flamingo the tropical theme really came to life.

  2. Gorgeous! Which buttercream did you use ? Would this work with an all shortening icing? Would this work with swiss meringue buttercream? I tried it with swiss meringue and it didn’t work out too well for me.

    1. Hi Anu, I used American buttercream for this cake. If you go to my tutorials and recipe page there is a link to the buttercream that I use. I hope this helps.
