Winter Snowflake Cake Tutorial

How is it December already? Here in the UK it has definitely started to get alot colder (and wetter, lol) over the last few weeks and is starting to feel very Christmasy. So I thought for this weeks video tutorial I would create a very wintery themed cake with snowflakes and icicles. This would also be perfect if you are looking to create a Frozen themed cake following the release of Frozen 2 recently.

I love how pretty this cake looks with the delicate snowflakes made from Royal icing, so if you want to see exactly how to make it, check out the the tutorial further down the page…

Frozen Snowflake Cake

For the cake itself this is a 6 inch round cake covered in a blue marbled fondant. I love how when the blue gel colour isn’t fully mixed in you get a very frosty effect which looked perfect as a background for the snowflakes. I covered this in a layer of pearl white & blue lustre dust. Its a little hard to see in the photos, but it just gave an amazing shimmer in the light.

How to make Royal icing snowflakes

For the white snowflakes I used Royal icing and traced over some snowflake designs to give these pretty delicate snowflakes. The thing I love about these is by adding a little granulated sugar before they are dry it really looks like little ice crystals. When making the snowflakes definitely make sure you make a few extra as I did break a few of these just by picking them up!

You can download the template that I used for the snowflakes here!

To add to the snowflake effect I also embossed these pretty snowflakes behind the Royal Icing ones. This just gave another dimension to the cake and really made it look like the snowflakes were wrapped around the cake. To emboss the snowflakes I used the amazing ‘Snowflake Elements’ set by Sweetstamp. I also used the SweetStamp mother of pearl pixie pearls on the board to add more colour into the cake. I loved how these looked against the cake with the pearly blue, white, lilac and silver sprinkles.

    1. Hi Linda, There is a pink line of text which is a link underneath the first picture which allows you to download the template.

  1. What recipe did you use for the royal icing? I’ve never used royal icing before so I was wondering if there’s a specific recipe that works best for this cake with these results.

  2. I’m interested in the cake. Is it 3 layers of 6″? I wish you would have cut the cake so we could see the inside.

    1. Hi Linda, for this cake I used my normal vanilla cake recipe. I bake 2 6 inch cakes and cut these down into 2 layers each, so the cake is 4 layers with each layer just over an inch. Yu can find the vanilla cake recipe in the tutorial section.

  3. Would using candy melts for the snowflakes work just as well as the Royal icing? Excited to make this cake for my daughter’s birthday! Thanks in advance!

    1. Hi Liana, Yes you could definitely use candymelts for the snowflakes rather than royal icing. I hope you daughter loves the cake and has a lovely birthday.

  4. Wow such beautiful cakes Lynsey! Whereabous do I find the marble effect tutorial? Is it the one with gold leaf? Thanks 🙂
