With Valentines day just around the corner it’s this time of year when people get engaged and start planning engagement parties and weddings. One theme that always seems to be popular for these types of celebrations is ‘rustic’. Lots of natural earth tones and wooden decor. With this in mind, you may have seen in craft stores and online, little wooden slices which you can have engraved with names, messages, initials or dates. I thought wouldn’t it be great if these were completely edible and you could add these to your cakes and cupcakes. In this weeks video tutorial I am going to show you how I made these fondant cupcake toppers that look like wood slices…
The toppers measure just over 2 inches in diameter and I love how each one is slightly different just as they would be in nature. My favourite part of these toppers is the age rings that run around in circles on the top of the slices. This was created by wrapping fondant strips with a really thin darker edge into a spiral and flattening it down. I now the rings on a tree down’t run in a spiral but this is an easy way to give a great effect.
To add the lettering I used the small Cookie letter set by Sweetstamp. These were perfect as the letters are quite small, so they fit nicely on the top. I then used some brown edible tint mixed with some rejuvinator spirit to paint inside the embossed letters to give them that engraved look.

I really love how rustic these look, and also how they can be adapted for any event. If you didn’t want to add lettering you could also use some of the element sets by Sweet Stamp if you wanted to add images instead of text.
