I am so excited to be back this week with a new video tutorial for you. Just before Christmas we moved into our new house and last week I had plasters in and was having to get ceilings painted so I didn’t do very much baking in the kitchen.
But this week I am back and I thought I would create a pretty ribbon style banner which you could use to add names, ages or celebrations onto your cakes. I think it looks great to have text on your cake boards or on the front of your cake, but sometimes you might want something a little different. So this gumpaste banner would be great as a cake topper or to add to the front of your cake, and the best thing is they can be made in any colour to match your theme.
The toppers are so easy to make as it is just one piece of gumpaste. If you don’t have gumpaste you could also just add some tylo powder to your fondant to make it set a little firmer and keep its shape. On the front I used the Candy Letter set by Sweetstamp which was the perfect size. My largest letter measured 2.5cm in height, so I made my banner 3cm x 25cm. If you have more letters to add to the front you would just need to make it slightly longer to give you enough space. Also if you didn’t want to emboss your letters you could use letter cutters or paint the words on by hand.
When making the banner to really highlight the shape of the ribbon I just added a small amount of edible dust. This allows you to add some shadow and make the ribbon pop and bring it to life.
By adding some skewers to the banner they make the perfect toppers but you can even add them to the front of your cakes, just pop some edible glue onto the back.
So if you would like to see exactly how I made the banner then just click on the full step by step tutorial below. I love that these can be made in any colour and theme, maybe for a baby shower, a mothers day cake, or even as a wedding cake topper. I really hope you will enjoy making your own version of these toppers.
