So we may still be in lockdown, and although I can’t spend much time outside I am so happy Spring is finally here and its so nice to see the flowers starting to bloom in the garden. One flower that always seems to indicate the start of spring is the tulip. So to celebrate the warmer weather, for this weeks video tutorial I thought I would show you how to make these pretty pink gumpaste tulips to add onto your cakes…
One thing I love about tulips is they come in so many different colours, so you can change the colour of the petals to match your theme. In this tutorial I show you how to make a closed tulip which is just starting to open and also a fully opened tulip where you can see the stamen on the inside. I have then paired the tulips with some long green leaves before attaching them to the side of my cake with a small amount of royal icing on the back and a pretty satin ribbon to hold them in place.
Both versions of tulips are made using 6 petals on each, which have been formed using a tulip veiner and moulded around a spoon to get the correct shape. I also used my PME veining board which both helps when you need to add wires into your petals but also worked great to add a small seam up the center of the petal. I love how they looked with a combination of open and closed tulips as they never seem to all open at the same time.
If you want to make some tulips to add onto your own cakes, below you will find the full step by step video tutorial. I really hope you will enjoy it!
If you’re also looking to find out how to make other gumpaste / sugar flowers you will find more tutorials on my Tutorials page!.
