Welcome to my first tutorial of 2021! Firstly I wanted to wish you all a very Happy New Year. I am so excited to get started with all my new tutorials this year.
At the end of last year I started seeing people using dried flowers and more specifically dried palm leaves on their cakes. I absolutely love how these look, and if you’ve followed me for a while you will know when it comes to flowers and toppers I love to make my own. So for this weeks video tutorial I am going to be showing you how to make these pretty sugar palm leaves. Just click below for the full video tutorial
Creating the Palm Leaves
In the tutorial I make 2 different styles of palm leaves. First the spear palm which is wider at the bottom and flairs out into a point at the top. I also make a sun palm which resembles a pretty star burst. These are actually quite easy to make. I used a combination of gumpaste (squires floral paste) and fondant to allow me a little more time to work on the palms before the gumpaste dried. I created a template for each. For the spear palm this is a triangle and for the sun palm you will need a rectangle. I run through all the sizes in the video.
You then just create pleats in your gumpaste, make a few cuts and pull them into place. For each palm I made 2 pieces and joined these together at the center seam.
I had so much fun making these and they can be made in any colours to match the theme of your cake. They would look perfect on their own or combined with some pretty gumpaste flowers. I really hope you enjoy the tutorial and will be able to use it to make palm leaves for your own cakes.
