I am so excited to share this weeks video tutorial with you as this is a collaboration with Charity from The Lovely Baker YouTube channel. Every year Charity creates a cute Valentines cake with 2 animal toppers, and this year she asked me if I wanted to get involved too. So this week I will be adding to my animal cake topper collection and creating this pair of sweet monkey cake toppers.
Now I’ve added valentines elements to these but you could also make the monkeys for a jungle theme cake, or just for someone who loves monkeys…
Click the video below to see step by step how to make this cake with all the different elements ⇩
I had so much fun creating this cake and love the 2 different monkey toppers.
Making the monkey toppers
The monkeys are made from mixing fondant with some gumpaste (Squires Floral Paste) to allow it to dry firmer than fondant would on it’s own. This gives you the perfect toppers to add onto your cakes. The monkeys sit around 9cm in height and both fit perfectly on the top of this 6 inch cake.
When your making them my biggest tip is to make sure you let the body and head harden slightly before putting them together. These monkeys are made with quite a large head so if they are added together too soon the weight of the head can push onto the body making it wider at the bottom, and looking a little squished. I left mine for around and hour.
More animal cake topper Tutorials
I finished off the monkeys by adding some cute little flowers onto the side of one of their heads to look like a little flower crown, and added a valentines card into the hands of the other. I think these characters would be perfect for Valentines or if you are looking to create a jungle themed cake. You could also add them along side the elephant, lion and giraffe cake toppers from my recent tutorials.
I really hope you like the new monkey cake tutorial and enjoy giving them a try. I can’t wait to see your creations. If there is another animal you want me to try just let me know in the comments.
