Firstly I have to start this post with a massive thank you. This week the Cakes by Lynz YouTube channel hit 400,000 subscribers, which is so amazing. I honestly never expected the channel to grow to this size and I want to thank you all so much for subscribing to the channel, watching the tutorials, liking them and leaving comments. It really does mean so much to me.
If you’re new here and haven’t visited the YouTube channel yet, every Friday I upload a new tutorial showing you how to make and decorate cakes and cupcakes, techniques you can use, gumpaste flowers and so much more.
So back to this weeks tutorial. This week I really wanted to make something that was baking themed and just really fun to celebrate this milestone. So I’m going to be showing you how I made this giant cupcake that looks like a real cupcake…
If you want to see step by step how I made it just click the video below ⇩
For the main shape of the cake I use the Wilton giant cupcake cake tin. You will see in the tutorial how I cover the tin to stop the cake from sticking. I love this pan, but over the years I have found that on the odd occasion the cake can stick inside, but by covering the tin in parchemnt paper the cake comes right out.
The Recipe
The cake was my vanilla sponge cake recipe.
For the base of my cake I used:
10oz – Self Raising Flour
10oz – Butter
10oz Caster Sugar
3 eggs
2tbsp – Vanilla Essence / Flavouring
2tbsp – Milk
And for the top of my cupcake I used:
7oz – Self Raising Flour
7oz – Butter
7oz Caster Sugar
2 eggs
1tbsp – Vanilla Essence / Flavouring
2tbsp – Milk
Both baked at 170 degrees Celsius (bottom for 1hr 10 mins and the top for 1 hour)
It was then filled and covered in some pink vanilla buttercream. Now even though it’s only a 4 layer cake I did decide to add some dowels and a thin cake board inside my cake. If I was covering my cake in buttercream rosettes on the top I wouldn’t have chosen to do this, but as I was adding quite alot of fondant onto the top, to create the buttercream swirl effect I didn’t want the weight of the top to push down and push the buttercream out from my lower layers, so I added these for a bit of support.
In the tutorial I show you how I covered the cake to look like it has a dark pink cupcake case on the bottom. Real sponge cake in the middle and a pretty buttercream swirl on the top.
Now what cupcake would be complete without some sprinkles. I needed to use slightly larger sprinkles so they looked in size comparison to the cupcake, and these medium size purple chocolate balls by Happy Sprinkles worked perfectly.
I really hope you enjoy the video and will find this tutorial useful if you want to make your own giant cupcake. Plus if you haven’t already you can subscribe to my YouTube channel for more Free cake decorating video tutorials.
