At the start of November in the UK there is the Cake International cake show which takes place at the NEC in Birmingham over 3 days. It is an exhibition packed with amazing cakes, amazing products and lots of demonstrations. This year I was so honoured as Sweet Stamp asked me to demo on their stand.

I planned to demo how to make a watermelon themed cake topper which would look perfect on a watermelon themed cake. I’m so excited to share this weeks video tutorial as I actually filmed how to make the entire cake for you. You can also see some of my highlights from Cake International at the end of this post.

This was such a fun cake to make, and it would be perfect for a summer themed party. One of my favourite parts is the cake that’s covered to look like a watermelon. You will see in the tutorial I used a dummy cake, but the panel effect that I used to cover the cake would work perfectly on a buttercream or ganached covered cake too. The cake was covered in fondant and I love the blending effect between the red and the light green. This for me really made it feel like a watermelon.

The Watermelon Shapes

One thing that I love about the Sweet Stamp products is they can be used in so many different ways. From the letter sets to their element sets it’s great to experiment. For this cake I used the Tooti Frutti element set which includes a fun little watermelon shape. By using this on the board I was able to add a really fun design, that tied in with the cake and the cake topper too. This really makes the cake stand out and no one would miss the watermelon theme!

I then used 3 of their letter sets; the Handwritten set for the ‘One’, their new Timeless letter set for ‘In A’ and lastly the new Glow set for ‘Melon’. I love mixing the different sets together as you can really create such a pretty personalised message. Once the shapes or letters are stamped into the fondant you just need to paint inside.

I really loved creating this cake and I really hope you enjoy the tutorial. I just have to say a massive thank you to Sweet Stamp for having me on their stand at Cake International and I can’t wait to attend again next year.

A Few Cake International 2021 Highlights

Here are a few of the highlights from the show which I managed to capture on camera. I have to say my biggest highlight from the day was meeting so many of you. I was overwhelmed by how many of you came and said hello and it was lovely speaking with so many of you. I usually work at home filming the tutorials for my YouTube channel so being able to meet the people who watch them in person is something I will treasure.

It’s the first show they have been able to have in 2 years due to the covid restrictions and it was such fun to spend the day there. In the photos below you can see me with the lovely Amy from Sweet Stamp, getting to meet Mr Bakers Cakes, catching up with the ladies from Fest Cake London. The amazing cake displays including Medusa by Emma Jayne (top right) and Zoe Fancy Cakes Centore (bottom left). Oh and that’s me just about to start my demo in the bottom right!
