With Valentine’s Day just a month away I thought it would be really fun this week to create a cake that would be perfect for Valentine’s Day. So if you’re looking for ideas, this weeks I’m showing you how I created this xoxo buttercream cake with a pretty kiss cake topper, sprinkles around the bottom and a fun pink drip on the top. You can watch the step by step tutorial below!

XOXO Sweet Stamp Embosser

You may have seen a few weeks ago on the blog I showed you the new Valentine’s theme range from SweetStamp. Part of this range are their new embosser stamps. Just like the letter sets you know I love, instead of making your own stamp the embossers come with words and messages already laid out for you to push straight into your cakes. This week I thought the XOXO embosser would be perfect to go with the Kiss cake topper I was making.

These embossers make it so easy to add fun messages onto your cakes and cupcakes. For this cake I was actually pushing the stamp into buttercream. I was using my American buttercream recipe and I would advise you chill your cake for a little longer than normal, just to make the buttercream really firm. I chilled mine for around an hour. You then want to dust the surface of your cake in a little corn flour before you lightly push your stamp into your cake. This stops any of that buttercream from pulling away when you remove the stamp.

In the tutorial as well as the Sweet Stamp embosser I also used their gel colour, their Baby Doll Halo sprinkles around the bottom of the cake and their pink choc colour to make my drip pink.

The Kiss Cake Topper

When planning this cake I knew I wanted to add a kiss on the top. If you’ve ever seen someone wearing lipstick who leaves a mark on your cheek or on a tissue you get the outline of the kiss with little lines missing.

For this topper I created a template of some lips which you can download here: DOWNLOAD LIPS TEMPLATE

The lips measured 5.5 inches across and I printed them out on some card and cut them out. I could then use this as a template to cut out my gumpaste / floral paste. Now if you want to recreate this topper I would suggest using a gumpaste or floral paste which sets completely solid. Because of the shape of the topper if it remains soft the top lip could collapse down.

I used the Squires Floral Paste and let it set over night. This worked perfectly and the topper set solid and completely held it’s shape. One thing I would say if you want to put your cake in the fridge attach your cake topper once you have removed it. Gumpaste / floral paste gets very sticky in the fridge and looses its stiffness.

I really loved how this topper turned out. I finished it off with some confectioners glaze to give it a little shine before adding it into the cake.

In the tutorial you will also see how I added the sprinkles and drip onto the cake. I really hope you enjoy the video and I hope you’ll be able to use some of these techniques on your own cakes.
