This week I’ve started seeing Spring flowers start to pop up, and with Spring just around the corner I thought it would be fun to create a colourful Spring themed cake, and what makes you think of Spring more than colourful tulips. So this week I’m showing you how you can use the tulip flower piping nozzle to create this tulip cake.

White Buttercream

When designing this cake I wanted the focus to be on the tulips, so wanted a very neautral coloured cake. I used my American buttercream recipe for the filling and covering of my 6 inch vanilla sponge cake, but instead of leaving it the yellowy tone of buttercream I coloured my buttercream white. This gave the perfect canvas to add my coloured tulips.

The Piping Nozzles

Piping flowers can sometimes be tricky, but for this cake I used the tulip flower tip (Russian piping tip) which make creating pretty flowers so easy. This one was from Nifty Nozzles and is their May Tulip and I also used the 366 leaf piping tip to create the tulip leaves. You can also find a very similar piping nozzle in a lot of Russian piping tip sets.

One thing I love about tulips is their range of colours and tones in each flower. To recreate this I used more of my American buttercream and created different shades. You will see in the video how by adding stripes of the darker buttercream up the side of the piping bag before adding a lighter colour you get stripes of colour up the side of the petals.

I also love that you could create this cake in any colour, you could also add these tulips onto cupcakes or even add them to other buttercream flowers.

I really hope you enjoy the tutorial and will find it useful if you want to create your own Spring inspired cake.
