How to make Gumpaste Lilacs – The Perfect Filler Flowers

This post may contain affiliate links. Please read my privacy policy for more details

I recently asked over on YouTube and Instagram what kind of tutorials you wanted to see and so many of you said more gumpaste flower tutorials. Now if you’ve followed me for a while you will know I love making gumpaste flowers. One flower that I love and which is really great for using as a filler around larger flowers are lilacs.

So this week I’m showing you how you can make these delicate little lilacs.

Making the gumpaste lilacs

If you’ve ever seen lilac flowers growing they are so small and delicate. For these I used the Squires floral paste and coloured it in a really pretty lilac colour using the Colour Splash violet and a little hint of light pink.

For the flowers themselves there are 3 different stages you can create; the bud, the bud that is just starting to open and the fully opened flower.

I love that by adding a variety of each of the flowers together it really brings the flowers to life on your cake. In the video you will see just how easy the flowers are to make, and they use a very little amount of tools. All you really need is some wire, a small ball tool and a tiny pair of scissors.

Because the flowers are so small instead of using a foam mat I find it best to shape the flowers against your finger. If you find your hands are naturally quite warm you can dust your finger with a little corn flower to stop the gumpaste from sticking first.

Once you’ve created a selection of the different flowers these can be added to your cakes as filler flowers around larger gumpaste flowers or even put together to create little bunches of lilacs.

I really hope you enjoy the tutorial and will be able to use the tutorial to create little lilac flowers for your own cakes.
