With Halloween just around the corner I thought it would be really fun this week to make a Halloween inspired cake tutorial. I wanted to create something quite cute and not too scary, so I’ll be showing you how to make this cute ghost cake, with minimal carving and no wasted cake!

3D cake without wasted cake
You’ll see in the tutorial I start with a 5 inch sponge cake. I baked 2 cakes and split eat cake into 2 layers, giving me a total height of around 5 inches. I started by carving the top of the cake so it curved over for the top of the ghosts head. I then saved all the excess pieces of cakes I’d trimmed off, mixed these with some ganache and used them to build the shape of the ghost around the bottom.
By adding pieces of cake mixture I was able to build up the shapes of the pleats, so instead of just allowing the fondant to drape over the cake I could smooth it against the side, creating the distinctive ghost shape. This is a great way to create a 3D cake without having a lot of wasted cake.
Also if you don’t have enough offcuts you could use a few cupcakes to create your mixture.

The Cake Board
One of my favourite parts of this cake is the cake board. I themed the cake board to my cake by embossing the word BOO! across it, so it would peak out from the cake when it was added. This is quite subtle, but I loved how it looked and think it would look amazing with other words for other celebrations too.

For the lettering I used both the Glow and Cutie pie letter sets from Sweet Stamp. Both are quite cartoony lettersets, so I was able to combine the 2 to get a really fun effect.
I also used some star plunger cutters to finish off the board. In the tutorial you’ll see that instead of using them as cutters, if you push the plunger to the end you can use them in a very similar way to the letters.

I had so much fun creating this cake, adding on the cute little Kawaii inspired face and creating the bunting using the Bunting letter set by Sweet Stamp. In the tutorial you’ll also see how I created the cute little bow for the top of the ghosts head.
I really hope you enjoy the video and I hope you’ll be able to use some of these techniques on your own cakes. If you haven’t already you can subscribe to my YouTube channel for more Free cake decorating video tutorials.
