How to make a Scallop Shaped Cake

Have you ever thought about creating a different shaped cake to the normal round cake? Recently I saw the new scallop shaped Flawless finish plates from Sweet Stamp and I just had to give them a try. I just love to pretty they make your cake look. Its really likes a giant daisy shape. It also looks so pretty on it’s own, but you could also add decorating or use it as part of a tiered cake too!

Watch my latest tutorial below to see just how easy it is to create this effect!

The Sweet Stamp Flawless Finish Plates

You may have heard me rave about round acrylic plates / ganaching plates in the past which really help give a smooth finish to your cakes and this is the same idea. The only difference is the plates are shaped. So instead of getting a smooth round cake, the plates help you create this pretty scallop shape.

The plates come in a pack of 2 and the 6 inch plates measure around 6.5 inches at the thinnest part and 7.5 inches from widest edge to edge. This is something to bear in mind when choosing a cake board or if you’re stacking your cakes.

Now in the video you will see I’m using a 6 inch cake with these plates. This does need quite a lot of buttercream, but you can also use ganache too. Alternatively if you didn’t want to use as much buttercream you could use a slightly larger cake; either a 7 inch or and 8 inch cake and cut it down to fit inside the plates with a little space left around the edge for buttercream.

Once your cake has been prepared you’ll want to place this in the center of the discs. I covered my discs with some parchment paper in the center to help me lift them off at the end and stop that buttercream from sticking to the acrylic plates.

It’s then a case of filling the space between the cake and the outside edge of the plates with buttercream before using a smoothing tool around the side. You just want to make sure your smoothing tool connects to the edge of the top and bottom plates as you pull it around and you’ll see your cake start to take shape in no time.

My advice when using these plates is just to take your time. It won’t be smooth the first time you run the smoother around and you’ll want to fill in any gaps you missed with buttercream, but the more you bring the smoother around the better the finish will look.
